Mallory Kane has spent the majority of her life thinking she was worthless and the farthest thing from special, so when she receives a letter from the world’s most prestigious university offering her a full scholarship she’s rightfully skeptical. It doesn’t take her long to realize Sentia University is nothing like the brochure packet would have you believe. Monsters roam the halls – usually in search of coffee or their next class – and according to Administration, Mallory is one of them. She’s about to learn the world around her is much more magical and dangerous than she could have ever possibly dreamed.

Danica Hyde blends technology with magic as easily as breathing, which makes her one of the world’s leading Technomancers, despite being only twenty. She enjoys the simple things in life – shopping, traveling, watching TV, eating delicious food, playing video games, annoying her sister and blowing things up in her lab. She also enjoys the company of pretty people, more so if there isn’t a lot of talking involved. Both she and her sister are Ifrits, generally considered the most powerful species on the planet, though that power comes with a price. Ifrits, and all Vampiric species for that matter, have to feed on either the blood or energy of others. Danica’s unique lineage makes her nearly impossible for others to resist, which makes feeding on sexual energy in order to survive an easy task.

Reyna Hyde is a warm and friendly magical savant who can win over even the most hostile individuals, usually with baked goods. This helps to explain how she is able to smooth over her sister’s near constant altercations so well. It also probably explains why she was asked by the Dean to become roommates with Mallory in the first place. Reyna spends most of her time baking magic into treats, creating paintings that come to life, playing with her three adorable shapeshifting puppies and learning about every type of magic she can get her hands on.

The three new roommates have more in common than they realize, but that’s not always a good thing. They might be able to live with each other, but the real question is – can they survive each other?

What a better time of year than Halloween to be attending the premier and very secretive college for magical beings. Normal holiday festivities take on a very sinister atmosphere in the Monster world. The most popular attraction by far is the haunted maze – where the walls and ground constantly move, revealing terrifying creatures behind every corner and one wrong step could have deadly consequences.

While trying to enjoy the Halloween season at her new school, Mallory Kane has also been obsessed with bringing her best friend Rosa back from the dead. After learning a Resurrection was possible during her first week of Elemental Magic, it is all she can think about. Well that and getting past the trauma of the horrific night when her roommates, sisters Danica and Reyna, tried to kill her.

Danica is also having a difficult time getting over that night and the guilt she feels towards Mallory. While knowing she was under a curse and not able to control her actions, it still eats away at her that she attacked Mallory. Luckily she has her sister, and well Halloween, both eventually bring her around to be her more “normal” self. Helping Mallory track down Rosa’s ghost and bonding during their capture by the police reminds Danica how much she enjoys her new roommate and partner in crime.

Reyna, in her usual maternal role, works her magic by learning more about Resurrections to help Mallory and bring the roommates back together again. Well that, and keeping them out of trouble, which they seem to be able to get into quite frequently. Reyna has to bail them out of jail, but surprisingly is the one to suggest they break into the police station to steal evidence on Rosa’s murder. Unlike her usual demeanor, her dark side does tend to peek out at times.

As Mallory gets to know the sisters more, she starts to realize they are possibly the scariest and most powerful Monsters in existence, and she’s beginning to wonder if she might be just as dangerous. But it’s the Halloween season and time to enjoy themselves – after all, what better time to be a Monster, track down a ghost and perform a Resurrection than Halloween?
